Basic Meditation

This class is one hour per week for six weeks. Meditation is an ancient way to deal with modern sensory overload. It helps you slow down and become centered so you can hear the quiet intuitive voice within. We will discuss Zen, Qigong, and Eastern Indian meditation while learning about breath, posture, and mental state. There will be lots of in-class practice time. A good introduction to general meditation so you can pick the style that works best for you.

Class Time: 60 minutes, once night per week for six weeks

Class Cost: $75 per student

Basic Back and Neck Massage

This is a 60-75 minute class held once per week for six weeks. The style taught will be the basic techniques of Seifukujitsu (“Say-fu-ku-jitsu”) or Japanese Restorative Massage. These are the massage techniques taught to students of the martial art Dan Zan Ryu Jujitsu. Students learn basic anatomy of the back and neck, body positioning, and various effective massage techniques.

This class is intended for three groups: beginners looking to learn their first massage style, couples looking to meet each other’s massage needs, and massage therapists wanting another ‘tool on their belt’ through exposure to a style not commonly taught.

This class is always a lot of fun. Upon completion, you will have given and received five massages and you will be able to give a competent back and neck massage.

Class Time: 60-75 minutes, once per week for six weeks

Class Cost: $75 per student, $140 if two students register together

Japanese Jujitsu

Jujitsu means ‘gentle tricks’ or ‘gentle arts’ and originated as the unarmed combat techniques of the Samurai. This is a martial art based not on strength but on balance, leverage, and momentum. Students will be learning the Dan Zan Ryu system of Japanese Jujitsu. One of the great aspects of this system is that students are taught in a progressive and safe manner that allows them to develop skills before they move into the next level of difficulty.

Jujitsu has the philosophy that if you can harm someone, you should also be able to heal them of the same injury. Therefore, while students learn rolls, falls, joint locks, throws, and constrictions, they also learn therapeutic massage, resuscitation techniques, and Kappos or healing techniques for specific ailments.

The focus of this class will not be on fighting. The goals are technique and health. A typical class will consist of 30 minutes strength/stretching/coordination exercises, 60 minutes of jujitsu technique practice, and 30 minutes of massage.

Class Time: 2 hours, once per week, ongoing class

Class Cost: $50 per month, annual membership in the American Judo and Jujitsu Federation ($50)

Due to space limitations, only 4-6 students at a time.

Soaring Crane Qigong

The three pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine are acupuncture, medicinal herbs, and qigong. Qigong is the study of movements and exercises that can positively affect qi, or energy, in the body. There are many styles of qigong practiced in the world. One of the best styles known for its health benefits is Soaring Crane Qigong.

This class will be taught in two parts. In the six-week Basic class, students will learn general qigong theory, point names and locations, and simple exercises to tonify good qi in their body and drain spent qi from their body. In the eight-week Intermediate class, students will learn the Five Routines of Soaring Crane Qigong. These exercises take about 30 minutes and are fantastic for increasing overall health.

If all goes well, we may hold ongoing weekly sessions in Vancouver for Intermediate graduates.

Class Time: to be determined, once per week
